Care of Washing Machines, Dryers, Dishwashers (2)

Agitating Fins Breaking

Some washing machines have thin flexible blades on the agitator. These are known to break if the washing machine is overloaded or hard objects are washed such as sneakers. Washing machines effected are Fisher & Paykel, Whirlpool top loaders and some other late model USA washing machines.

Front Loaders Door Catch Breaking

A problem with front loaders is people trying to force the door open and breaking the catch mechanism. Most front loaders have a door interlock switch/catch that will not open until 2- 3 minutes after the cycle finishes. Most use a thermal method which heat metal that expands, it will not allow the door to open until it cools down.

Dishwasher Door Catch Breaking

The door catch on most dishwashers are not very well designed and break too easily. Do not slam the door close, it will break the door catch. Close the door gently and press the door close firmly above the door open latch. The door catch can be adjusted, if too loose the door can leak, if too tight, it can lead to breaking of the door catch by closing the door too hard.

Other Dishwater Problems

Dishwashers filters should be fitted correctly to prevent food scraps from being pumped through wash jets. If the jets get blocked with food scraps, it can be cleaned by the user. The user manual will give instructions for removing the rotating arms to be removed for cleaning. Blocked jets will need to decrease in washing efficiency or block the pumps.

Dryers

Simpson Fan Belt (Early)

Check to see if air is being blown out of the outlet, it is very easy replaced.

Hoover & other

If a metal to metal noise is heard when the drum is rotating, then the dryer needs to be repaired immediately other wise the dryer may not be economical to repair. The cabinet and drum may need to be replaced. Turning the dryer upside down may stop the noise and give you some extra time.

Direct Drive Washing Machines with Noisy Bearings

When the spin cycle get noisy on washing machine (ie F/P, some Asian washing machines), water is leaking through the bearings and seal. This needs to be fixed as the water can leak onto the motor winding causing them to fail, which in turn can cause the PCB to fail also, making the repair uneconomical. This can also be seen with dirty water marks on the inside of the cabinet and other parts. The picture shows a Fisher & Paykel motor damaged by water.

Front Loader Door seals

Be careful putting clothes into and removing from a front loader washing machine. Zips and other metal objects on clothes can damage the door seal (cuts ).

Leave the door ajar when not using the washing machine. It will stop mold forming on the rubber door seal. Use a chlorine beach (White king or shower mold remover etc ) to remove mold.
