Daewoo Washer Dryer Repair

Repair to the dryer on a Daewoo washer/dryer repair, model DWC-LD1412

This is a front loader washing machine with a (condenser?) dryer. By the time I finished fixing it it this is how I think it works.

A fan draws air from the bottom of the wash barrel spraying it with water. Then it blow through a heating element with an over temperature thermostat and the into the front of the wash barrel where a temperature sensor measure the temperature. Another one is located some where at the bottom of the wash barrel. These temperature sensors are little 'bullets' with 2 wires and vary resistance with temperature. The dryer does a spin dry cycle first before going into the drying cycle, where the drum rotates slowly. This increased the testing time!

Initial test shows no heating current on the ammeter and no voltage at the element or over temperature thermostat. Easy to measure. The fan also appears not to be operating, the little plug prevented any voltage measurement.

Some auto-sensing dryer require moisture inside the the dryer, connected the inlet hose to a tap and put a damp cloth inside. Still no heat or fan

The next easy thing to measure was the temperature sensor after the heater. This was found to be open circuit. Ordered a new part and several days later fitted it. Still no heat and this time stopped with error code 'S3', but the manual had error code 'S3', 'S4' but no error code 'S3'.

The fan not working, the plug at the fan was too small to make resistance measurement, but the plug on the PCB controller had a larger on, although a little difficult to reach and unplug, not much room here. The resistance was 4 ohms between one pair but open circuit between the third wire. The wire at the fan plug had come loose but was still appeared to be OK. With a bit of cutting I was able to solder the wire directly onto the motor. The resistance between all 3 wires is 4 ohms. (The fan motor is a 3 phase motor and the PCB supplies it with 24V 3 phase electricity.) On testing the dryer heated and works OK. The wire from the cabinet to the fan plug was a bit short and had pulled out with the vibration of the wash drum.

Note the manual was downloaded from the manufactures web site, if you have trouble getting one I can send it to you.
