Why I decided to convert my Hillman Imp to Electric.

After restoring the brakes I then started on the engine. The pistons were rusted in the bore. I evenly got them out but the engine needed more repairs. I then decided to replace the engine with an electric motor. I reassembled the motor and will use it as a static display. One day I will get the motor running again but not in my car.

The car will be on a club permit and you will be able to drive it 45 days each year. I am not going to save any money on fuel costs. However, I have plans to use it as a battery for my home rooftop solar system.  When I made the decision I was buying electricity from the grid at 30 cents/kWh and selling the excess to the grid for 5.5 cents/kWh.  It is now 30 cents/kWh and 3.3 cents/kWh. (2024) The savings are not from selling electricity back to the grid. It is by using the electricity the solar panel generates and not buying from the grid. The smart meter only shows how much you buy and how much you send back to the grid. It does not show how much you used from the solar panels. The inverter has this information On my web pages I have information on how to calculate this. (Washfix.com.au → Information.) Bi-directional chargers are expensive and are not yet approved yet.  If you look at the electricity market this will change soon.
